5GEE Router 2021 review

The network’s mobile broadband plans are a good alternative to slow or limited home broadband plans. According to Open Signal’s October 2020 speed test results you can get average speeds of 36Mbps from EE. Keep in mind that 4G speeds & coverage vary depending on location & number of users.

You can use EE’s online coverage map to get an idea of what the signal is like where you are. Plus, it’s got a 30 metre Wi-Fi range, so all but the very biggest homes will be able to get fully connected. There are four ethernet ports too, if you’d rather use a wired connection for any of your devices. That means if you’re in a place with good EE 4G coverage but poor broadband speeds, then the 4GEE Home Router 2 could be a great alternative to fibre broadband. However, it’s never going to match the very fastest fibre speeds – but they’re not available in most properties anyway. Another related feature in respect to connectivity is the fact that, as mobile broadband devices, both are portable.

Full Review

The 4GEE Home Router 2 is one of the best options for 4G home broadband. EE's plans are slightly limited and there are faster 5G option, but this is a great, feature-packed 4G router. Mobile broadband devices offer a viable alternative to fixed-line home broadband. They boast the lack of a home phone line and a fixed-term contract with a broadband provider among their advantages.

It has a white stand, so it can sit upright, and it’s reasonably small at 40 x 155 x 29.5mm. There’s not a whole lot else to say about the design – it won’t win any awards, but nor does it look any worse than most 4G home broadband routers. Read more in our review of EE mobile broadband and our in-depth look at Three mobile broadband. Unlike EE's router, Three's is available on a Pay As You Go basis for £59.99.

Alternative Broadband Plans

In the UK, EE now offers 4G home broadband from £35 per month. Using the 4GEE Home Router 3, you can connect up to 64 devices to the internet at the same time. You’ll get average download speeds of 40Mbps when you choose the 300GB or unlimited data plan . Threehas the fastest 5G data speeds and you can get aThree 5G Home Broadbandplan, provided you live in an area with Three’s 5G coverage. All you have to do is plug it in and wait for it to connect.

Once you confirm your order, EE should deliver the necessary hardware within the next working day. Depending on the stock situation your order may take a bit longer to arrive. Find out which networks have launched 5G in your area, or when it is coming to your area.

Who offers 4G home broadband?

FTTP On Demand is not available either according to OpenReach. When you sign up for EE’s 4G home broadband, you’ll now receive the 4GEE Home Router 3 . Still, ‘standing out’ is usually low on people’s list of wants from a router, and the 4GEE Home Router 2 instead fits in – especially if it’s placed near other white or black gadgets. EE also promises to provide free 5GB data boosts every month. For ultra-portability however, you'd want a battery powered mobile wi-fi hotspot instead. We also noted a slower speed around peak times, evenings and weekends, of around 45Mb but this was more than fast enough for our needs - browsing the web and streaming music and videos.

However, it's also important to say that there are some differences between 4G broadband and regular broadband. This is because, while regular internet runs through cables and Wi-Fi signals, 4G broadband runs off 4G data . For this reason, 4G broadband works in the same way as your phone. If you live in a remote area or you travel around the country and need a reliable Wi-Fi connection, then a 4G home broadband deal could be the perfect solution to your broadband problems. So, in short, a great idea but EE have demanded such a steep price and imposed a device buying restriction to make it as unappealing as possible a proposition.

RootMetrics review of the first half of 2021 put EE's aggregate median download speeds at 58.8Mbps, more than three times O2's 15.6Mbps. Mobile networks need to expand their 5G sites within towns and cities to bring 5G connectivity to a greater area. Only then will paying for 5G-ready devices and connectivity really be worth it.

That’s broadly in line with the average 5G speeds you can expect on its network when using a phone too, unsurprisingly. Live in a slow speed area, or can’t access a fixed broadband line? Connect instantly with 4GEE Home – the ideal alternative to fixed broadband, on the UK’s fastest network. Say hello to broadband speeds as fast as fibre, with our simple plug and play router and no need for a fixed line. Perfect for gaming, streaming and downloading in Ultra HD and 4K. One of the most popular models is the NETGEAR Nighthawk MR1100 Mobile Hotspot 4G Router with a data transfer rate of up to 1000 Mbps.

Both devices come with a power plug, SIM card and ethernet cable. It has a slightly more expensive-looking design than the Three router, courtesy of its more detailed logo and shiny top case. It's a slightly smaller size to the Three router, measuring 14.6 x 14.6 x 3.2cm. It's also a more conventional shape and heavier so we didn't experience the same tipping over issues when moving the device. EE were the first mobile network to switch on 5G, launching in six cities back in May 2019. As the names suggest, one only works on the 4G network while the more expensive home router is able to use the EE 5G network as well.

The EE 4GEE Home Router 2 is designed as an alternative to conventional home broadband, as it delivers your connection over EE’s 4G mobile network. On the 5G side of things, data from RootMetrics shows EE's median 5G download speeds ranged from 102.2Mb to 162.9Mb in the 16 cities tested. Looking at these figures, though, it's clear EE's mobile broadband won't be available in every location across the UK, especially outdoors. However, they do have good coverage in comparison to other networks, and their placing in Ofcom's rankings is solid. EE is routinely named as the fastest mobile provider in the UK, making their mobile broadband some of the fastest around. You’ll need to sign up for an 18-month 5GEE plan to enjoy EE’s 5G data speeds.
